Painted Clock Dials

Decorative Techniques and the Time Track

Join Carol Buonato in a step-by-step workshop on reproducing historical tall case clock dials, from drawing a time track with Arabic and Roman numerals to decorating the arch and spandrels.

The featured design incorporates historically authentic elements from several dials.  Decorative techniques include: Pontypool painting, creating a luminous, dimensional quality, applying gesso for a raised effect, and laying gold leaf.

The Historical Society of Early American Decoration proudly presents this  video as part of its educational mission to preserve and reproduce 18th and 19th Century designs.

Carol Buonato is a graduate of Dickinson College and learned her painting techniques from HSEAD teachers.  She has been painting and restoring clock dials for over 20 years and recently received HSEAD's Specialist Award in Painted Clock Dials.
