For the past several years, HSEAD has sent a bookmark to its members, in appreciation of their support.  The Society plans to continue this practice, and these bookmarks show the potential of being a valued collectible.

Each laminated bookmark is approximately 7 inches long, and shows a photographic representation of one of our crafts.  On the reverse is a relevant quote, HSEAD's statement of appreciation (Thank you for your support and contribution to HSEAD) and the official address of the organization.  At the left is HSEAD's official seal.

The 2011 bookmark features clock dials by members Laura Bullitt, Carol Buonato and Astrid Donnellan. The quote on the reverse reads:

“Right now a moment of time is fleeting by! Capture its reality in paint... We must become that moment, make ourselves a sensitive recording plate... give the image of what we actually see...” Paul Cezanne

The 2006 bookmark illustrates an Early American tinware design, reproduced by member Patricia Murphy.  The quote on the reverse is:

"...the old time decorator, with his brush, laid on his paints in perfection of form and rhythm down to the tiniest detail of leaf spray and curling tendril."  Esther Stevens Brazer

The 2007 bookmark, shown at the right, illustrates a chair back pattern from HSEAD's Schnader Chair Pattern Collection.  The inscription is:

"...a cornucopia of fruited vines and clusters, sinuous floral sprays, festoons and berried wreaths,... the language of painted furniture in America...."  Florence deDampierre, The Best of Painted Furniture.

The 2008 bookmark, left, shows a detail from a tray painted in gold leaf and free hand bronze by Phyllis Sherman, HSEAD Master Craftsman - a reproduction of an 18th century original signed by H. Clay (12" x 16").  It is inscribed:

"Just living is not enough," said the butterfly, "one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."  Hans Christian Anderson.

The 2009 bookmark, right, shows a border detail from a tray by Betty Taylor.  This pattern (from the Natalie Ramsey collection) is in HSEADs Lending Library of Design.  The inscription is:

"With this 'velvet finger' we transfer a few grains of bronze powder...
the smooth shining beauty of this stenciling was a joy to behold."
                                                                  Esther Stevens Brazer

The 2010 bookmark, left, illustrates etched gold leaf under glass, produced by member Anne Dimock.  The official seal has been moved to the front.  The inscription on the reverse is:

Etched gold Reverse Glass painting "softly reflect[ing] the shapes and color[s] of the surrounding environment....is further enhanced by the play of light's 'life giving reflections' on its surface."
