Small Gold Leaf Pattern - Carolyn Hedge

This is the very first gold leaf pattern I attempted many years ago. I put it on a very small round tray, and have displayed it since I painted it in 1970.  The tray's floor diameter is 3 5/8 inches.  (Scale pattern to size required.)

I’m not sure of the origin of this design, but it is adaptable for many different uses.

Instructions:

  1. Entire design is done in 23k gold leaf. I recommend using Roloco Quick Dry Gilding Size.
  2. Etch details on leaves and flowers as shown on pattern.
  3. Apply color, giving depth to the flowers and leaves, as shown on the pattern (shaded areas). Color is also added to the stamens. Asphaltum (Rembrant) is a beautiful color to use over gold leaf.

For excellent gold leaf instructions see Newsletter, Issue No. 87, Summer 2009, “Gold Leaf Butterfly Pattern” by Carol Heinz, or better yet, get her video on Gold Leaf!  It will be available at the Spring meeting in Auburn, NY. – Carolyn Hedge
