Historical Society of Early American Decoration
No Teacher Near You?
All HSEAD members are kept in contact with the
organization by means of a quarterly Newsletter,
and The Decorator, official journal of the
organization, published twice a year. In addition, we suggest the following
educational options for members who cannot locate a teacher in their area.
HSEAD Teaching Materials
- HSEAD Country Tin and
Stenciling Kits are published
specifically for applicants for Brazer Guild membership, and contain all the
information you need to complete to complete any of twelve Country Painting tin
or Stenciling projects. The
Tin kits include actual
painted samples of the traditional colors which are so important in keeping your
work authentic, and the Stenciling kits include accurate color photos of the
finished designs.
- In addition, the HSEAD Master Series of Instructional
Videos and DVDS provides specific instruction in various skills by the best
teachers in their fields. These currently include
Country Painting,
Bronze Powder Stenciling,
Freehand Bronze Painting,
American Painted Clock Dials,
and Theorem Painting,
and we expect new videos to be produced yearly. The kits and videos are available for purchase
at
our HSEAD Store.
HSEAD Archives
- Available for purchase in our
Schnader Collection are fine photographic examples
of chairback decorations, featuring stenciling and
painting in various styles. They are supplied with pattern tracings as
well as the photos of finished work. Also available is the
HSEAD Theorem Pattern Collection,
with over 150 authentic patterns. These
include a full size pattern and a color photo of the finished theorem.
- Also, members only have access to
the HSEAD Lending Library of Design, with excellent
actual work samples and patterns in Country Painting, Stenciling on Tin
and on Wood, Freehand Bronzing, Metal Leaf, Reverse Painting on Glass, Clock
Dials, and more.
HSEAD Courses
- Each fall, HSEAD operates a four - day conference
for members at Killington, Vermont, at which many of the Early
American and related disciplines are taught. Attendees select one
course from a list of ten or more. In addition, they get to meet
and make friends with other crafts persons of like interests. For
details about the current Killington workshop, please use the link in the
News section of our home page.
- Many HSEAD teacher-members teach courses in their own studios and in
regional craft schools. Some of these are
listed on our Links page.
Finally, a call or email to the HSEAD office will be forwarded to a member
who will try to help you locate instructional opportunities. Part of our
mission is to promote the continuation of our crafts, and we will do our best to
assist you.
