CRITERIA FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF A NEW CATEGORY TO BE JUDGED FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP
CATEGORIES APPLICABLE FOR JUDGING
Section 1, Article 1 of the By Laws of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD) states “……….Early American Decoration is a term applied to the decorated articles that adorned the homes of our ancestors.”
The criteria outlined in this Standards Manual for categories of early American decoration (EAD) are used to evaluate the artwork reproduced by HSEAD members. Their decorated pieces are submitted for recognition of skills, technique and overall aesthetics, are judged and members are given awards. The categories of early American decoration listed in this Standards Manual are applicable for judging. Only the following categories are applicable toward earning Master Craftsman Award: Country Painting, Stenciling on Wood and Stenciling on Tin, Metal Leaf Painting (Gold and Silver Leaf), Freehand Bronze, Pontypool Painting (Lace Edge Painting), Victorian Flower Painting (Chippendale) and Painting on Glass (With a Border) (See section on Master Craftsman Award.)
Many categories of Decorative Art were found in American homes of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Each of the present categories for judging has been evaluated by the Judging and Standards Committee of HSEAD. The categories have been researched for their historical authenticity, techniques and styles. The Lending Library of Design continues to develop a portfolio of authentic patterns recorded from originals or from recordings not more than once removed form an original. Qualified teachers who have studied and recorded these early American decorative art-forms presently teach the techniques of each of these categories.
