HSEAD Fall Workshop Meeting

September 27-29, 2007   Killington, VT

Penwork

Taught by Nancy Corcoran

This class is designed for anyone interested in the many aspects of penwork.  There will be techniques for the novice as well as those who wish to improve their penwork skills.  We will cover the basics such as how to hold the pen, outlining the design, filling in the background and detail, and scratching out detail.  Preparation of the surface and the base coats for inking, clean up and varnishing will be discussed and demonstrated.  A small amount of home work will be required before class.

The project is not difficult but it is time consuming.  In order to achieve the quality of high craftsmanship, the box cannot be completed in the time limits of the three day workshop.  However, our goal will be to complete the bottom, top and a couple of sides of the box.  You will be able to leave the workshop with the necessary skills and knowledge to easily complete the other sides at home.

This year we will have a choice of two patterns, one with a natural background and one with a white background.  At the time of registration please pick your pattern so I can prepare the box.

Lab fee: $40  includes a prepared box, instruction booklet, bibliography, pattern and templates and miscellaneous supplies.  A supply list will be sent with your confirmation.

Supplies:
●  TV Tray Table (Optional)  (I find the hotel tables too high to work comfortably at.  This is a good alternative.)
●  Lamp and extension cord.  You will need good lighting.
●  Magnifying glasses (Optional). They help in producing fine work and to get right on top of your work.
●  Pens:  Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pens:  .25 (medium) and .18 (fine).  These will be the sizes you will need to execute these patterns properly.
●  X-acto knife with a #16 blade
●  6” corked backed ruler
●  Stylus: Any semi sharp point used to trace the pattern.  An old Koh-I-Noor pen nib is good.
●  Scratch out tool: Any sharp pointed object like a heavy needle that can be used to scratch out fine lines such as tendrils or fine stems.
●  Kneaded eraser
●  Typing shield
●  Masking tape
●  A small soft clean brush such as a #6 round for dusting off scrapings.
●  Pink Pearl eraser
If you have trouble locating any supplies please let me know and I will get them for you.
