Red toleware octagonal tray, rolled wire edge, red, green, blue and yellow foliate design on white ground with red center reserve and gold double line detail on edge, 8 1/2 " t, 12 1/4" w'. prov.: Fred Koch, Condition: minor flaking.  Estimate $2,500- 3,500. Actual sale price $1,600.

The design presented is an adaptation of the original tray. Please note that the end designs were not identical as well as the sides were not identical, but very similar. The original design was done in oils, most likely from the Filley Shop in Philadelphia in the mid 1850's. I have adapted the design and painted it in acrylics (JoSonja's Artist Colors). The pattern included is an adaptation of the original, with some minor changes.

Once the tray is base-coated, and the white opaque border has been painted, dried, lightly wet sand, dry again and use a tack cloth to remove any dust. Transfer the pattern, use a tack cloth again and you are ready to paint the design.

First I painted all the yellow areas with Yellow Deep (the "sunflowers" on both ends and the two peaches on each side. Allow this to dry thoroughly.  With a pale or thinned Prussian Blue do the stroke flowers, leaf and 3 berries on the sides as well as the inner petals of the sunflower on the ends. Again, allow these to dry thoroughly. Base in the 4 large leaves and the 2 smaller leaves on the sides and the base of the two blue stroke flowers with Pine Green.  Next paint the berries with either Vermillion or Napthol Crimson (depending if you prefer a more orange or red color). Also the center of each of the two blue flowers have several red ovals. With a stippling brush or your finger dipped into the paint and varnish, do the center of the sunflowers on the ends and the shading on the peaches on the sides.

For the details, stems are Pine Green extending from the berries. There is also a series of comma strokes on the ends by the sunflower, and fine green lines extending from the base of the blue stroke flowers as well as a few extra lines from the top of the flower. A red circle is at the base of each of the 3 blue berries on the sides.

Darker green vein lines are in the 4 large leaves and 2 smaller leaves.  A few yellow cross hatching strokes are over the center of the sunflower. Fine lines of Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre separate the yellow sunflower petals.

The peaches have a fine line of Raw Sienna along the red side. Only one peach had a few short fine line strokes radiating from the raw sienna line. The one end of the tray had a Raw Sienna curlique next to the sunflower on the original tray.  Also note that the one blue flower has a few small "dots" of red between the berries on the original tray.
