Butterfly Watercolor Theorem

by Dolores Furnari

The pattern and instructions for this watercolor butterfly correspond to the article in the Summer, 2008 Newsletter.  The design is from the HSEAD Theorem Collection and was recorded by Gina Martin from an original theorem on paper from Canada owned by V. Scobie.  More text under the pictures.

Dolores Furnari Framed Theorem (7x9") Close-Up Butterfly Pattern

Watercolor paints used: DaVinci tube colors Indian yellow, Prussian blue, Mauve, Lamp black, Olive green, Chrom. Oxide green, Alizarin crimson and Titanium white. Medium is water. Do not mix any medium with these paints.

Directions: Cut 4 stencils from 3Mil Mylar. Using Olive green on the outside of the wings, blending Indian yellow and being careful not to touch the yellow add the blue close to the body using Prussian blue with a little white. The lower wings are Mauve. The overlay of detail and the body as well as the outer fringe of the wings are thin black.  Be very sure that your paints are very dry on the brush. All leaves and hulls for the flowers are undercoated with Indian yellow. Then apply Chrom. Oxide green and a little Prussian blue for deeper shading.  Keep it light so your painted veins will show.  Cut a template to mottle in the large vein areas on the top of the wings with black. The flower buds are Indian yellow blending in Prussian blue with Alizarin crimson line work. Add connecting stems and veins with Chrom. Oxide green and water as the medium.

Note: If you do not have the means to download this from the HSEAD website you can purchase this design #78 from the Cooperstown office. It is the oil rendition. I also use the Scharff stencil brushes for theorems and a #0 Series #455 liner, as advertised in The Decorator. -Dolores Furnari
