The Hudson River School of Painting

The Hudson Valley Chapter will host HSEAD's 2011 Annual Spring Meeting, at the Holiday Inn Albany Hotel and Conference Center, at 205 Wolf Road, near the Albany airport   The theme of the meeting is "The Hudson River School of Painting". This mid-19th century art movement is the first American school of painting, and it's philosophy was the discovery of nature and the American vision.

The work of the Hudson River School artists excited much of decorative art of the time.  "Why should not the American landscape painter, in accordance with the principle of self-government, boldly originate a high and independent style, based on his native resources?" asked Asher B. Durand, one of the painters.

Friday afternoon's business meeting will be followed by a short illustrated talk by Lynne Richards, editor of our "Decorator".  Her subject will be the "Forgotten Ladies", artist wives, sisters and friends of The Hudson River School of Painters.

Friday's after dinner speaker will be Katherine Manthorne, professor of Modern Art {1750-1950] at City University of New York.  She will introduce us to Eliza Pratt Greatorex, first female admitted to the National Academy of Design. Katherine Manthorne's newly published biography on Greatorex has enlighten so many to the life and work of this painter and to her daughters who could be considered Victorian Flower Painters.

During the meeting, the Hudson Valley Chapter will host a bus tour to "Olana, " the Persian style home of Frederick Edwin Church, and "Cedar Grove," the Thomas Cole National Historic Site. Our visit to these historic homes of two Hudson River School painters will feature guided docents through the sites, and we will enjoy beautiful views of the Hudson River and the Catskill mountains.  A boxed lunch will be provided by the Holiday Inn and it can be eaten on the beautiful grounds of "Olana"'.  Buses will return to Albany, leaving time for exhibition viewing and rest before dinner. Complete tour price is $45.

Saturday's dinner will be followed by awards and honors as well as the distribution of raffle prizes.  Please see the beautiful quilt featured below.  It has been created by Hudson Valley Chapter member Robert Flachbarth in red and white. The Burgoyne Surrounded design will be stunning in the lucky raffle winner's home.
